Interview with David Suk

Co-Founder & CEO of Saint Luna Moonshine

In this exclusive interview, we delve into David Suk's journey, the ethos behind Saint Luna, and the passion that drives their innovative spirits. Join us as we uncover the story behind this trailblazing brand and the vision that propels it forward.

Can you share the story behind why you decided to start your company?

I thought there was an opportunity to modernize and elevate moonshine. The idea was to pay homage to that part of American history, and create a product that was exceptional quality, smooth on its own and something that can be the base for a great cocktail. We thought a lot about the packaging as well. We wanted something you'd be proud to keep on your back bar or home bar.

How do you think your background and identity have influenced the way you run your business in the alcohol industry?

I am formerly the Chief Operating Officer of aden + anais, and I've certainly taken all those lessons (the good and the bad) along with me. Having a strong sales background definitely helps when the majority of my day is spent pitching and selling Saint Luna. Sales teaches you to develop a thick skin, which you'll certainly need when pounding the pavement all day!

What were your biggest challenges when you got started, and what is your biggest challenge right now?

Our biggest challenge has been finding the right decision maker at a bar or restaurant. The good news is that once we find that person, they tend to love Saint Luna. What we are doing is incredibly unique, very tasty and plays well in a wide range of cocktails. So we often times are quite the hit.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds who are interested in entering the alcohol production industry?

I personally think the biggest piece of advice is the understanding that no single person can build a company on their own. Building a company takes great people and we at Saint Luna have been so incredibly lucky to have an amazing community of friends and supporters that truly help us each and every day. We regularly get friends introducing us to bar owners, media outlets and resources that help us grow our business.

What inspires you to keep going when things get hard?

Every time I feel a bit down, something incredible will happen and perhaps that is the universe telling me to keep going. I feel down, and then Forbes features one of our cocktails. We have been lucky enough to have been featured six-times in Forbes and those moments definitely keep me going. I've also noticed more and more people behind the bar are aware of Saint Luna. The increase in overall brand awareness has been incredibly motivating.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you or your company?

Saint Luna is a craft moonshine, and one of few gay-owned and operated spirit brands. We make Saint Luna from 95% grade-A molasses and 5% rye, then use a charred oak stave to filter our spirit. You get a bit of grassy rum on the front of your palette, and bit of spice and pepper from the rye on the back of your palette and smoky leather on the finish from that charred oak. Saint Luna is exception on its own, and absolutely gorgeous in a wide-range of cocktails.

As we conclude this insightful interview with David Suk, co-founder of Saint Luna Moonshine, we raise a toast to diversity, excellence, and craftsmanship. Saint Luna's commitment to inclusivity and innovation shines through their exceptional spirits, embodying the spirit of progress and celebration.
