Women in Brewing

Interview with Harsha Maragh

CEO & Co-Founder of Wah Gwaan Brewing Company

We sat down with Harsha to discuss her journey, the challenges of the industry, and what’s next for Wah Gwaan Brewing Company.

Can you share the story behind why you decided to start your company?

My partner and I wanted to start a brewery that focused on inclusion, diversity and community while sharing the vibrant culture of Jamaica with Denver.

How do you think your background and identity have influenced the way you run your business in the alcohol industry?

My cultural background played a huge role in how I ran our brewery. I focused a lot on community, involving friends and family and incorporating sustainability (my professional background) into every aspect possible.

What were your biggest challenges when you got started, and what is your biggest challenge right now?

The biggest challenge then and now is funding. Being people of color, we did not have access to funding in the same way that our peers did.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds who are interested in entering the alcohol production industry?

Authentic diversity is MUCH needed in this industry — keep pushing and don’t let the negativity stop you.

What inspires you to keep going when things get hard?

My partner, Jesse, and knowing that we were/are a one of a kind brewery

Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you or your company?

We have since closed our brick and mortar in Denver but are looking to bring our brand back into cans and on tap in the future!

Harsha Maragh’s unwavering commitment to her craft and culture is inspiring, proving that challenges can be stepping stones to even greater success. Be sure to follow Wah Gwaan Brewing Company on social media @wahgwaanbrewingco to stay updated on their exciting journey back to cans and taps.
